Eric White's Comments:
In its final form, Carroll Shelby's special version of the 1965 Mustang was a barely civilized, purpose-built, competition machine. By 1967, Shelby's Mustang had begun to acquire the patina of compromise. Gone were the modified suspension, trunk-mounted battery, exhaust headers and limited color choices. With its racing heritage and winning reputation well established, Ford steered the Shelby image in a more consumer friendly, and thus more saleable, direction. Convenience items like power steering and brakes, air conditioning and twice as many exterior color choices made for a more palatable and streetable car. To placate performance fans, a big-block 428 ci engine was made standard in the new G.T.500 model.
