Ken Eberts: “*The Mercer and the Bridge* was a commission for the gentleman who owned the Mercer at the time I did the painting. (Jay Leno owns it now). The boy is the gentleman who commissioned me and he is being given a ride in the Mercer by his father. The Gentleman who commissioned me also worked as an ambulance driver at night while attending law school and crossed the Brooklyn Bridge many times.”
German immigrant John Roebling invented woven wire rope allowing construction of big suspension bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge. A son made the Mercer possible.
