Michael Irvine : “When creating a painting and deciding on the subject matter, I try to make a connection between the three main elements – the cars, the setting and the title. In this painting I chose big blocks – all the cars had to be built in the ’60s, available in factory black and have factory installed hood scoops. The setting creates a relationship between the location and the cars.
Here, the factory represents the birthplace of revolutionized automotive production. The final element, the title, is often the foundation for a painting. Whether Henry Ford actually coined the phrase is unknown, but the idea that at one point Fords were only available in black was irresistible.”
