James Hunt 1976 Japan Grand Prix Victory

James Hunt Victory in McLaren: Fuji Speedway, Japan / 24 October 1976

40 years ago, one of the most charismatic Formula One drivers of all time won the World Championship: James Hunt secured his title at Fuji in Japan.

With heavy fog and running water on parts of the track, drivers debated whether the race should even proceed.  The gallivanting  Hunt took the lead from the start.  Because of the risks, several drivers withdrew including Nikki Lauda (“my life is worth more than a title”) who began the race ahead in the Drivers Championship.

Hunt had to fight through a tire puncture, a delayed pit stop and confused team messages. In the final laps, Hunt sensationally fought his way into third position – and to his surprise, won enough points to secure the title!
