Race historians celebrate Juan Manuel Fangio’s victory in the 1957 German Grand Prix among the greatest of all time.
It was this victory at Nürburgring that sealed for Fangio the World Championship that year driving his Maserati 250F. To beat the fleet Ferrari teams, he decided to race with softer tires and half the fuel. It would give him a an edge in cornering speed, although he would have to pit about half way through the race.
For the first half of the race, the strategy proved itself. Fangio was able to command a huge lead in style. But the inevitable pit stop proved a disaster.
One of the Maserati mechanics dropped a wheel nut – and then had to grope around beneath the car until he found it. This cost Fangio a lot of time and he subsequently rejoined in third. For most drivers, that would have been insurmountable. Instead…
Fangio himself said: “I have never driven that quickly before in my life and I don’t think I will ever be able to do it again”.
Within 10 magical laps, he moved into 2nd place, breaking the lap record a total of 9 times – in so doing registering a fastest time unsurpassed for 46 years. Fangio wasn’t done. Ahead of him was the race leader, Mike Hawthorn… whom he passed spectacularly with only his right tires on the track and his left tires on the grass.
Each image is a combination of Hollywood special effects, model-making, high definition digital photography and art. Here is an example of the level of detail.
Another example of level of detail in each image, the Maserati 250F as it must have looked after leaving the fateful pits stop.
