Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Saoutchik 1928 in precision resin cast 1:43 scale
Winner Best of Show at 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
Ordered in 1928 in Dove Grey, it sported a dark red lizard skin interior, disappearing top, and German silver trim on the fenders
An American couple who commissioned the car failed to take delivery as the stock market crashed and the IRS went after the husband for back taxe. Mercedes decided to display it at the 1929 New York Auto Salon where they found a buyer in an oil tycoon. The fancy car helped the tycoon woo his wife away from another suitor. After 75 years in the ownership of the Bedford family, it was sold in 2006 and then again in 2008, after which it underwent a frame-off restoration by Paul Russell and Company to bring it back to its original condition.
The car – serial number 35949 – sold for $7,500,000 at RM Auctions, Monterey, CA. in 2013. View the video that shows it winning Best of Show at Pebble Beach in 2012.
Ilario’s brilliant replica presents the car as it appeared in the sparkle of the lights of the New York Auto Salon. And thanks to the exhaustive restoration, as it appears today. The edition is limited to only 50 models. An earlier release by Ilario of a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Saoutchik Torpedo – limited to 120 – sold out.
