Americans prefer made in America, it’s only natural. But what does *made in America* really mean? Could an import actually be more made in American than an American brand?
We have answers, and will tell you the most *red, white & blue* cars.
Among tops in index of Most American-Made: Buick Enclave
It’s not obvious what criteria you have in mind when you ask which are the most American made. Would you say any Chrysler is American made… even though the company that makes the Dodge Hellcat is FCA, headquartered in the UK. And culturally seems really to be Fiat.
So is Chrysler an American company like GM is?
Cars.com rates vehicles built and bought in the U.S. based on the percentage of parts considered domestic under federal regulations, whether the car is assembled in the U.S., and U.S. sales. This would seem to correlate more or less with number of American workers employed to make each car. So would therefore measure how directly “good” for the US economy a specific marque is.
According to Cars.com, the most American car you can own is the Toyota Camry!!
The gadget & style blog Supercompressor tipped us to an index called the Kogod Made in America Index. It’s put together by the Kogod School of Business at American University in Washington, DC. Kogod weights lots of factors to rank cars for the “American-ness”.
- Location of automaker’s global headquarters
- Labor & Inventory: Location of assembly
- Research and Development
- Location of component production (engine, transmission, etc.)
- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration AALA “Domestic Content” Score
